Year 5 and 6

We aim to inspire creativity and develop pupils’ artistic skills in a supportive, challenging environment.

In our bright, purpose-built Art Studio, pupils explore drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics and sculpture, building confidence and individuality through experimentation with a range of media and techniques. Lessons are taught by our specialist Head of Art, and pupils also benefit from visits, community projects, working with visiting artists and opportunities to enter competitions or apply for Art scholarships at senior schools.

In Year 5 and Year 6, Computing develops pupils’ digital literacy and confidence in using a wide range of technologies. Children are introduced to programming, animation, website design and digital media, alongside core IT skills such as presentation, word processing and data handling.

Online safety is an integral part of the curriculum, with a strong emphasis on developing safe and responsible digital behaviours both in school and at home. Learning is supported by a fully equipped computer suite, class sets of iPads and laptops, and interactive whiteboards in every classroom, allowing technology to be embedded across the wider curriculum.

Design & Technology develops pupils’ awareness of design and its role in the world around them.

In our purpose-built Design & Technology workshop, pupils enjoy weekly lessons with a specialist teacher, exploring resistant materials, textiles, food technology and mechanical systems. Projects include idea generation, practical skills, testing and evaluation, while opportunities to work with guest speakers, pursue independent projects and prepare for scholarships help pupils extend their creativity and understanding.

Drama develops creativity, confidence and communication through both improvised and scripted performance.

In Year 5 and Year 6, pupils have timetabled lessons and take part in a wide range of productions, assemblies and celebrations, including the Year 6 musical and the annual French Nativity Play. Opportunities are also available through drama and musical theatre clubs, visiting artists and cross-curricular projects, helping pupils build presentation skills, teamwork and self-expression in a fun and engaging environment.

We aim to develop pupils’ literacy and communication skills, enabling them to express themselves creatively and effectively through speaking and writing. Pupils explore a wide range of texts, develop a love of reading, and are encouraged to transfer their skills across the curriculum.

Opportunities for creative expression include LAMDA, debating, storytelling and performance poetry, while visits from authors and theatre companies enrich learning. Pupils also prepare for secondary school through verbal reasoning and other focused activities.

We aim to inspire a love of the French language and culture while building confidence and fluency from an early age. In Year 5 and Year 6, pupils have two lessons per week, revisiting and extending vocabulary and exploring everyday topics to ensure progression, challenge and continued enjoyment of the language.

In Year 5 and Year 6, there is growing emphasis on reading and writing skills and the work is mostly topic-based. Grammatical concepts are introduced which prepares pupils for the transition to their senior schools.

The course highlight is, without a doubt, the very popular Year 5 annual visit to Normandy in France. On this five-day trip, the girls are able to develop their experience of French life and culture and put into practice the language skills learnt.

We aim to inspire curiosity about our planet and the impact humans have on its fragile environment. Pupils develop geographical skills and knowledge through stimulating topics while building map skills and understanding patterns, processes and sustainability.

Learning takes place both in and out of the classroom, using maps, atlases, aerial photographs and ICT to explore, investigate and answer questions about the world around them.

We aim to inspire a love of History and the wonder of the past. Pupils explore exciting and engaging topics that spark curiosity, imagination and a deeper understanding, helping them uncover the stories, drama and discoveries that have shaped our society.

We believe Maths is for everyone. Our aim is to provide high-quality teaching and engaging learning experiences that develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving, while fostering confidence, enjoyment and independence. Pupils are challenged with rich problems, encouraged to share their ideas and supported to develop collaborative and independent thinking, preparing them with the skills and understanding they need for everyday life.

Music plays a central role at Warwick Prep, bringing people together and offering opportunities to perform, create and communicate. Pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 are taught by specialist teachers in our state-of-the-art music school, exploring a wide range of instruments and genres.

Pupils can sit ABRSM and Trinity exams, perform in concerts locally and in school, and many go on to achieve scholarships at senior schools, developing confidence, creativity and a lifelong love of music.

There are many opportunities to join our numerous music clubs including Wind Band, Orchestra and Cellissimo.

Physical Education inspires a love of sport and physical activity while building skill, confidence and good sportsmanship. Pupils are encouraged to do their best, both individually and in teams, learning to win and to accept losing.

From Year 3, girls take part in weekly matches, tournaments and inter-house competitions in sports including netball, hockey, swimming, tennis, gymnastics, rounders and athletics. Co-curricular clubs, dance, yoga and links with local and Foundation coaches offer even more opportunities to develop skills, stay active and enjoy sport in all its forms.

The aim of Religious Education at Warwick Prep is to help pupils understand the nature of religion, belief and practice, fostering tolerance, respect and an appreciation of different cultures and faiths. Pupils both learn about religions and learn from them, developing reflection and understanding.

Religious Education is taught as a discrete subject throughout the school and is delivered through a range of engaging and accessible teaching approaches, including stories, discussion, research, video clips and creative activities. These varied methods support pupils in exploring key themes and expressing their understanding through writing, role play and artistic response.

Science is central to understanding the world around us, and at Warwick Prep we reflect its importance in everyday life through engaging and practical learning.

In Year 5 and Year 6, Science is taught by specialist teachers in two well-equipped laboratories, with a strong emphasis on hands-on, investigative work that encourages curiosity and enthusiasm. Through practical activities and experiments, pupils develop key scientific skills such as hypothesising, observing, measuring and recording, while gaining a secure understanding of scientific concepts.

PSHEE (Personal, Health, Social and Economic Education) at Warwick Prep supports pupils’ personal, social and emotional development, equipping them with the skills they need to manage everyday life, build positive relationships, develop values and take increasing responsibility as they grow. While pupils have a dedicated PSHEE lesson each week, these principles are embedded throughout school life.

All pupils follow the Jigsaw PSHEE programme, which is taught at an age-appropriate level across all year groups. The Jigsaw programme follows a progressive, spiral approach, ensuring that learning from previous years is revisited, developed and extended, with new knowledge, skills and understanding introduced as pupils mature.

Each year, pupils explore six core themes:

· Spring Term: Dreams and Goals and Healthy Me

· Summer Term: Relationships and Changing Me

The Library is a warm and inviting hub of learning and resources, supporting all areas of the curriculum and pupils’ personal interests. It houses a wide range of fiction and non-fiction, with pupils’ recommendations carefully considered when new books are purchased.

Open at lunchtimes, the Library provides a comfortable space for reading and book exchanges, and is supported by Year 5 Library Assistants. The school also celebrates reading through events such as Book Fairs and World Book Day®.
